The people of Cambridge are very intelligent and I believe their elected officials should be able to report in each election cycle what they have accomplished for the common good. In this 2012-2013 City Council term, I have succeeded in getting the city to establish an Office of College Success, which will aid Cambridge's students to go to and get through college. My work on this initiative began in 2007. The establishment of the Office of College Success represents the first time Cambridge has acknowledged responsibility for students after graduation. I am very proud that the city has taken this step. If we really want our kids to succeed, what wouldn't we do to support them? This term, I also authored the council order that directed the city manager to engage a talented consultant to help the city to better plan the emerging development in Central and Kendall squares. This resulted in launching the C2K2 report process, which caused us to undertake a comprehensive look at how to best develop each square for the best quality of life for all concerned. Both squares received the most thorough planning review that they have had in the last two decades. This work was led by David Dixon of the architectural and planning firm, Goody Clancy. A new discussion was also started about how the city can prompt the building more “Median Income Housing,” so that real, socio-economic diversity can prevail. Our collective knowledge base about smart development advanced significantly this term. We built upon the work of the Mayors Red Ribbon Commission on Central Square, which I also led. The most important thing that the City Council did this term was to hire a new city manager. This was no small feat, especially when the council made no progress on this matter in 11 months of 2012. I helped to break the logjam of indecision and disparate directions that stymied council action. Leadership is important. I'm very pleased that we selected Richard Rossi as our new manager. I believe that he is the right person for this time and I believe that he has been able to seamlessly step in and guide the many ongoing city initiatives and administrative matters. I seek re-election, and your No. 1 vote, so that I can help to further lead the city towards its brightest future.
